About Us

Tai Clwyd was established in June 1974 as a charitable Housing Association to provide houses for rent – with an emphasis on housing young families and the elderly.

Within a year a piece of land was purchased in Llansannan and by 1979 – eight new houses were built and the associations first tenants had moved into their new homes.

In the early years the the Association’s administration was fullfilled on a voluntary by the board of management. By 1982 two full time officers were employed, John Glyn Jones as Development Officer and Catrin Hughes as Secretary; An office was also opened on Denbigh High Street

In the eighties the Association concentrated on buying houses in a poor condition and renovating them and then renting them These were often terraced houses or large houses that could modified into flats.

By 1989 the Association owned around 200 houses and a change of emphasis was taken. The next 10 years was a period of building mainly new houses, including shared ownership houses – The main aim of these houses were to assist young people on a low income to purchase a house step by step, with the aim of becoming full purchasers when their budget allowed.

By 1996 another scheme was set up to assist people to buy their own home – The Homebuy Scheme, and the association continue to operate this scheme

Staff

Gradually the associations area was expanded, and in 1993 an area office was opened in Bala.
By 1997 there was a 1000 homes and 35 members of staff, The Association had also setup Denbighshire Care & Repair that helps to assist elderly and disabled to live in their own home In 2004, the Association celebrated it’s 30th birthday with a number of events and charity fundraising activities organised to note the occasion.

By 2011 the Association manages over 1700 homes with 70 members of staff. We also have Tenants on the Board of Management and we do more than provide homes. It is the Association’s belief that it is important to assist communities in other ways and now have specific officers working in the community. The journey since 1974 has been a long one and we are now on solid foundations and looking forward to the future.
