Youth Homeless Outreach Worker

The Youth Homeless Outreach Worker is a job in partnership between Cymdeithas Tai Clwyd and Conwy Housing Services. The post was created to promote the participation of young people in the services which have an effect on their day to day lives. By acknowledging the fact that young people are alienated from such systems, a sign of extensive social exclusion. Although the post was created originally in response to homelessness as the most extreme case of exclusion, by now it has established a proactive strategy in response to youth homelessness and also developed projects that bring communities and agencies together as well as encourage young people to work with others to improve the area which they live in.
Here are examples of tenant participation :
Participation training days that allow young homeless people, or people who have experienced homelessness, to come together and develop the skills they need to ensure their voices are heard when it comes to decision making levels.

16 young people took part in reviewing the Conwy Homeless Strategy. A consultation day was arranged so that the young people could take part in the consultaion process along side the Housing Strategy Manager, staff of the Housing Department and representatives from other relevant association / agencies.
On June 1st 2006 three young people went with the Outreach Worker to a ddiwrnod tystiolaeth yn y Rhyl. The event was organised by Shelter Cymru, a housing and homelessness charity
The development of a DVD that was produced by young homeless people or have been homeless in the past, which enables young people to discuss the situations they are faced with while being homeless and to suggest ways in which the service can improve through the medium of art, music and video.
One suggestion from the young people in the DVD how to improve the services was to start a hunan-adeiladu/adnewyddu scheme in Conwy. As a result, Conwy Housing Services are working on a pilot project that gives the chance for young homeless people who are out of work to renovate their accommodation and move on independantly. At present, 2 young people are being employed in a renovation project and another 4 will start in the new year.
