Joyce awarded for her achievements

Joyce Spencer was recently awarded the “Ruth Radley Outstanding Achievement in Participation” award by TPAS Cymru for her work with young people in Conwy county.

Joyce has been working alongside Tai Clwyd’s Youth Homeless Outreach Worker in Conwy County, Angela Watt, delivering homelessness awareness sessions to young people in high schools across the county.

Joyce had been homeless a couple of times over the years and felt that she could use her experiences in a positive manner to try and highlight the issues that impact on young people and their ability to sustain a tenancy. She attended a 15 week informal training programme which helped develop her skills and confidence, and now students are able to benefit from her experiences. She has received very positive feedback from the students, with remarks such as “It’s been good learning about homelessness by someone who has experienced it”.

In addition to her work in schools, Joyce has also been instrumental in setting up a number of other projects, including developing a lunch group for homeless young people which encourages their involvement in housing/homelessness issues, and the design of an information leaflet to be left in schools and other places where young people meet, so they know who to contact if they or someone they know is threatened with homelessness.

In addition to the TPAS award, and in recognition of all her hard work, totalling over 200 hours of volunteer work for Cymdeithas Tai Clwyd, Joyce was awarded with the Millenium Volunteers Certificate by David Taylor, Chief Officer of Conwy Voluntary Services Council.

Tai Clwyd would like to congratulate Joyce on her achievements, and thank her for her hard work with young people in Conwy County.
